Japan’s new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner will be among President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s first state guests this year. Yudhoyono will welcome President Fernandez at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday in a historical moment as is the first Argentinean President to make a state visit to Indonesia. The following day, the newly-inaugurated Abe will be accepted by Yudhoyono at the same Palace, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said on Monday.
“These first state visits of 2013 will be very important as they both involving leaders of important countries. As we know, Argentina is one of the biggest economies in South America,” Marty told reporters at the Palace. Indonesia and Argentina, as fellow G20 members, are expected to revitalize their 57-year-old diplomatic relations, particularly in the sectors of trade and investment. “Cooperation between the two countries is globally important,” he added.
According to Marty, Indonesia and Argentina will sign a number of Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) that will include those in the sectors of transportation and investment. Abe’s visit to Indonesia will be part of his first overseas trip following his inauguration last month. Besides Indonesia, Abe will also visit Vietnam and Thailand, with the aim to bolster ties with the growing Asian economies as relations with Beijing remain tense.
“Abe’s visit will not include any signing of MoUs, rather it would serve as an introduction visit by the new Prime Minister,” Marty said, adding that this year will mark the 50th anniversary of Indonesia-Japan relations and the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-Japan relation.
