0 Sublime Cultural Traces at Pakerisan River

Pakerisan River watershed poses one of the regions with a very high cultural value. The region extending from north to south within an area of about 20 km in Gianyar Regency has potential resources to be selected as community settlement. The rows of fertile rice field area with the flows of Lake Batur and Tirta Empul catchment make it a region having hopeful natural resources for life. The support of these natural resources makes the existing community attempt to meet their spiritual needs by taking advantage of the surrounding environment without causing unintended damage.

But in reality, the region has been pursued for the development of tourism facilities. Selection of the Pakerisan River Watershed does not necessarily mean if the existing sites along the Pakerisan River will be owned and controlled by UNESCO or the community outside Bali. This affirmation was confirmed by Secretary of Gianyar Regency Government, Cok. Gede Putra Nindia. He said the challenge in the efforts to preserve the valuable cultural heritage would be more severe. At least, the assistance of world organization would help the people of Bali to preserve their works retaining special universal value for the benefit of society itself.

He also acknowledged that regency government would regulate the arrangement of the existing region in the vicinity of the sites against any construction of villas and emergence of slums. All would then become the responsibility of local government. Various supporting facilities would pass through the government with respect to the master plan of the arrangement. As a religious region, along the watershed of Pakerisan River there are many cultural relics whose entire maintenance is currently performed by the surrounding community.

Unfortunately, the maintenance and management performed by the communities sometimes do not comply with the characteristics of the existing cultural heritage. For instance, architectural changes on the historical buildings had been adjusted to the current development. As consequence, the sublime value owned by the region disappears. There are dozens of sites in the Pakerisan watershed. Among others, there were sites in the Pagulingan Temple, Tirta Empul Temple, Mengening Temple, Gunung Kawi Cliff Temple, Kerobokan Cliff Temple, Pengukur-Ukuran Temple, Elephant Cave Temple, and Tegallinggah Cliff Temple.

Even the three sites consisting of Pegulingan Temple, Tirta Empul and Goa Gajah showed a cultural relic originating from the tenth century and characterized the existence of prehistoric cultural fusion with ancient Bali having a high importance so that can draw the attention of UNESCO.
