0 Buleleng to be fueled by natural gas by 2015

The administration of Buleleng regency and state gas distribution firm PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) signed an MoU as of Dec. 30, last year, for a preparation study to utilize natural gas as the source of electricity in the region. The MoU signed by Buleleng deputy regent, Nyoman Sutjidra, targets natural gas as the source of electricity for the regency by 2015. Follow up meetings with the oil and gas directorate general will be initiated in Jakarta on Thursday. “I will attend the meeting in Jakarta,” said Sutjidra on Tuesday.

The so-called city gas project is to commence in 2013. The infrastructure will be constructed in 2014 and by 2015, natural gas will be developed as the main source of electricity in Buleleng, Sutjidra said. “In the first stage of the project, 4,000 households in the urban area of Buleleng will be powered by natural gas,” he said, citing that the natural gas would be more affordable than the liquid gas commonly used in Indonesian households nowadays.

The natural gas will be extracted from Pagerungan Island in Madura, East Java, an area located right in the middle of the borders between Madura and Buleleng regency, about 64 kilometers from Gilimanuk. The natural gas will be distributed to Buleleng via pipes running through Gilimanuk. Sutjidra said Buleleng had been chosen for the natural gas-fuelled city pilot project in Bali because the waters off northern Buleleng and Pagerungan Island in Madura had demonstrated large reserves of natural gas. “We wish to develop this potential,” said Sutjidra.
