Former head of Bangli Tourism Agency, Wayan Gobang Edy Sucipto, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment after the panel of judges at the Denpasar Corruption Court found him guilty of corruption and collecting illegal levies. “The defendant has been proven guilty of receiving money amounting to Rp 366.7 million [US$34,580] from the Prona participants,” presiding judge I Gusti Agung Bagus Wijaya Adhi said.
Prona is the acronym for the national land certification program, in which the government provides a free-of-charge mechanism for residents, particularly in the country’s rural areas, to officially register their land and obtain the land ownership deeds. The panel of judges revealed that the criminal offense had been taking place from 2008-2011, when the defendant served as head of Kintamani district.
The defendant, assisted by one of his employees, informed the Prona participants that the program was not free-of-charge and that they should pay for the cost of issuing the land deeds. The sentence was heavier than the 16 months imprisonment sought by public prosecutor Wayan Eka Widyara. Gobang’s attorney Warsa T Bhuana announced that he would file an appeal.
