0 Student research center launched

While in Indonesia, most academic research is conducted at the level of universities, state-owned senior high school, SMA 3 Denpasar, recently established the Trisma Student Research Center aiming to encourage the earlier development of research potential among its students. The research center in a two-story building at the school was launched last Saturday by Denpasar Mayor IB Rai Dharma Wijaya Mantra. Mantra promised that the Denpasar administration would provide support funding through an allocation in the revised regional budget to complete the required equipment at the center.

“We want students to enjoy doing research at this center,” said Mantra. As a “one-stop research center”, the Trisma center will provide students with the facility to conduct various aspects of research, in both the sciences and humanities. “This center is the school’s appreciation for the achievements made by our students in research,” said SMA 3 Denpasar headmaster, I Ketut Suyastra, adding that the building where the center was established was named Prajna Paramita, deriving from a Sanskrit phrase meaning knowledge is an eternal beauty.

The Trisma Student Research Center consists of several rooms, including a research exhibition room, which displays all past research work of SMA 3 Denpasar students, that has received awards in national or international competitions. A mini laboratory is also available for students to perform experiments or observation. A small library and a discussion room are also available for the students. The Trisma research center also includes a media room for students engaging in the school’s journalism club, Madyapadma Journalistic Park.

The media room is called Studio MPTV Online, and through which student research will be published via its printed, TV, radio and digital library. “This room is for the activities of broadcasting and the Madyapadma Digital Library,” said the leader of the Madyapadma Journalistic Park, I Gusti Agung Yogiswara. An olympiad of science and humanities research for junior-high school students in Denpasar was held concurrently with the launch of the research center.

Out of the 47 junior high school teams participating in the three categories of the competition (Basic Science, Applied Science and Humanities), SLUB Saraswati 1 Denpasar took gold in the Applied Science and Humanities categories, while SMP Nusa Dua won the gold medal for Basic Science. SMA 3 Denpasar students have been known for their outstanding achievements in numerous national science competitions. Its journalism club has published books written by students on a regular basis and has also launched the island’s first online student television station.
