For the “Cina Bali”, the local term for Balinese of Chinese descent, Imlek (Chinese New Year) is more than just a joyful celebration. It is also a commemoration of the historical and emotional ties, which for centuries have bound them to the native Balinese.
Some of the ties were established in a time so long ago that the line between history and mythology is quite blurred, for example the tragic love story between Balinese King Jayapangus and Chinese Princess Kang Ching Wi.
Other stories are quite new and are still shared in coffee houses and at wedding receptions. Thanks to those ties, Chinese-Balinese have rarely been treated as outsiders and never as an enemy. Thanks to those ties, the island has evolved into a place where the Chinese speak Balinese and Balinese recount Chinese stories as their own — a home for two communities with an intertwined history and future.
