0 Supplement: It’s about love & compassion; it’s Saint Valentine’s Day

Tomorrow, people both young and old will express their true feelings to their loved ones in a variety of ways. Sending cards, bouquets of red roses, chocolates, candies, dolls, and anything red or pink is a long tradition to observe “the day of lovers”. Such traditions, started in Western countries, have spread all over the world, including here on the island of Bali. Shopping malls will decorate inside and out in romantic shades of pink and red, or pastel for some variety.

The fragrance of red roses will fill the air. Hotels, restaurants, cafes, entertainment centers and other establishments gear up to create the most attractive programs to draw people to their properties. Clothing stores, jewelers, chocolate shops, gift shops, bookstores and music stores are all offering their best products for the celebration of love. Romantic dinner dates are always on the minds of young lovers when St. Valentine’s Day approaches. An intimate dinner on St. Valentine’s Day in the jungle may have been beyond your wildest dreams.

But at WANA restaurant in the middle of Bali Zoo on Jl. Singapadu in Gianyar, your dream can become a reality. WANA (which means jungle in Balinese) Restaurant, Lounge and Bar is nestled next to the entrance of Bali Zoo, which is home to many kinds of wildlife, including lions, elephants and reptiles. Spending a romantic evening at WANA will be a most memorable way to celebrate the day of love. The exotic interior of the restaurant takes you on an adventurous journey into nature.

On St. Valentine’s Day, WANA restaurant is offering a very special romantic dinner package for two at only Rp 299,000 (US$24.74) net for two persons. Away from the jungle, The 101 Bali Legian in the glittering area of Legian is ready to offer the best experience to celebrate Valentine’s night. It has prepared an exceptional package — Valentine’s Dinner and Sky Pool Party. On Feb. 14, the Sky Pool Party will run from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. with a DJ performance and the appearance of a spectacular bartender.

Don’t forget to line up at the edge of the Sky Pool to enjoy a special Valentine free marathon shot. The 101 Bali Legian also offers a Valentine’s dinner for those celebrating Valentine’s Day with lovers, family and friends, with sumptuous food at several food stalls and live cooking demos. During dinnertime, guests will be entertained by an acoustic music performance from Trio Batak from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. However, St. Valentine’s Day is not only about sharing dinners, sending cards, exchanging flowers and gifts.

It is the day when people express their genuine love to others — parents, siblings, relatives, lovers, friends and people in general. Young people in Denpasar, school and university students, are raising funds to help victims of natural disasters in Bali and elsewhere in Indonesia as their expression of love and compassion to other human beings. Members of various NGOs are holding activities to help orphans, the elderly and impoverished families survive their hardships.

But amid this outpouring of love across much of the world, the exact origins of the celebration remain shrouded in mystery, although the holiday’s history has been well documented through the years. It’s still unclear exactly who the celebrated saint of love really was, as the Catholic church acknowledges three separate saints named Valentine or Valentinus. According to one legend, as noted on history.com, there was a young man named Valentine who was imprisoned for some reason.

While in prison, he is said to have fallen in love with a young girl — who may have been hisprosecutor’s daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it was alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed “from your Valentine”, an expression of love that still in use today. Despite the unclear origins, St. Valentine’s Day has become a symbol of love — a universal love that encompasses any differences and is a love for humanity.

Happy St. Valentine’s Day!
