Former regent of Buleleng, Putu Bagiada, the defendant in a lawsuit related to the corruption of Rp 1.6 billion (US$165,120) in land and building tax fees, has received a sentence lighter than that requested by the prosecution. The panel of judges, led by I Gusti Agung Bagus Komang Wijaya Adhi, sentenced the former regent to two years imprisonment. In Denpasar Corruption Court on Tuesday afternoon, Bagiada was also fined Rp 150 million.
If the fine is not paid, he will serve an additional three months in jail, as reported by Antara news agency. “In addition, the court is also instructing the defendant to pay damages amounting to Rp 574 million,” said the chief judge. The amount of damages has been calculated based on real losses to the state, rather than potential loss. The damages must be paid within one month of sentencing or the defendant’s property could be seized and auctioned to the value of the damages to be paid. The defendant has yet to decide whether to appeal the sentence.
