0 Maritime Labor Convention enforced from August

The head of the Indonesian Maritime Workers Association for Bali, Dewa Nyoman Budiarsa, stated that the Maritime Labor Convention (MLC) would come into effect and be strictly enforced across the world as of August. “As a consequence, every country, including Indonesia, must comply with the convention, the main aim of which is to improve the protection and welfare of workers in the maritime sector,” he said in Denpasar on Tuesday, as reported by Antara news agency.

He stated that the Indonesian government had not yet ratified the International Labor Organization’s Maritime Labor Convention that was stipulated in 2006. “We encourage the government to quickly ratify MLC 2006 because it will protect those who work at sea,” he said. Budiarsa stated that MLC 2006 could accommodate all the previous conventions, regulate the rights and responsibilities of stakeholders and improve protection and welfare for those in the maritime sector. To date only 38 countries of the 100 that signed up to the convention have ratified it.
