The province’s bamboo craft exports produced by small enterprises contributed US$12.86 million to Bali’s foreign exchange revenue last year. The value increased by 22.80 percent compared to the $10.47 million in 2011. “However, the commodity’s export volume to foreign markets slumped by 42.58 percent,” said the provincial administration’s spokesperson, I Ketut Teneng, as quoted by Antara news agency on Monday.
He said the volume of bamboo exports in 2011 reached 9.69 million units and decreased to 5.56 million units in 2012. The declining export volume demonstrated the higher value assigned by foreign markets to the commodity. “Bamboo crafts are one of the 17 products from small enterprises and home industries that have successfully penetrated many countries.” Teneng said the bamboo and rattan products that had been successfully distributed to foreign countries included paper containers, cone hats, wallets and several individual items.
Apart from exporting the commodity abroad, the craftsmen also sold their crafts in several tourism locations, targeting foreign and local tourists visiting Bali. Teneng said bamboo craft sales contributed 2.67 percent to the province’s total export value in 2012, which stood at $481.83 million. He added that 35.77 percent of the products were sold to the US, 9.82 percent to Hong Kong, 7.81 percent to Australia, 4.53 percent to Japan, 4.36 percent to Germany, 3.06 percent to the UK, 1.17 percent to Thailand, 0.41 percent to Singapore, 0.31 percent to France, 0.96 percent to the Netherlands, and the remaining 31.80 percent to other regions.
