The local police arrested on Friday IBSA, 25, a native of Sambangan village, who allegedly abandoned his toddler son on the Gilimanuk-Singaraja road recently. The boy was sheltered by a family before being taken care of by local social workers.
The suspect was taken into custody in the Sambangan village chief’s office, where he was about to process his divorce papers. It was reported that IBSA had separated, but was not legally divorced, from Dayu Putu Wija, the mother of the toddler.
“We received information that he would go to the village chief’s office that morning and I told my men to pick him up there,” Gerokgak Police chief Comr. Putu Juen said. IBSA admitted to the arresting officers that he was very upset when the 3-year-old boy kept crying during a trip.
He then abandoned the boy under a tree by the road in Gondol village in Gerokgak. “We will charge him with articles from the law on child protection, as well as the law on domestic violence. He will face a five-year prison term and a fine of up to Rp 100 million [US$8,187],” Juen added.
