The Jembrana administration has allocated Rp 1 billion (US$81,879) from the regency annual budget for disaster mitigation efforts. “We anticipate the possible occurrence of disasters this year. The funds will be used to finance post-disaster mitigation efforts,” Deputy Regent I Made Kembang Hartawan said.
Hartawan also said that the regency did not have any plan to establish a regional disaster mitigation agency. The existing agencies, including the health and social agencies, as well as the law and order agency, were quite able to deal with emergencies, he stated.
Establishing a new agency would require additional funding and at this point we believe that any available additional budget should be disbursed into real, concrete programs, instead of into creating a new agency.” The recent disasters, which affected five regencies and claimed five lives across the island, have alerted the local administrations to the need to have more robust disaster mitigation systems in place.
